Give-Away

This contest ended on August 10th

I have decided to give away a portion of my stash for no reason other than to clear some space in my house and reduce the yardage I have listed on Ravelry. In the last few days, I have gone through my entire stash and taken an inventory. I currently have over 48 thousand yards, or over 27 miles, of yarn in my house.

I am offering up 9,086 yards, or over 5 miles, or 11 skeins, of Caron Pound of Love worsted weight yarn. This is 18 percent of my stash!

This yarn was purchased with the intention of crocheting an afghan, but that was over four years ago. The yarn has been stored in the plastic bags it came in, in a tub in a spare room. It's in good shape, but I know it feels sad being left in those skeins for so long. And I know that I will not be able to use it in the near future.

So, I am looking for a good home for this yarn. It's free, and I will even ship it to you. All you have to do it leave me a comment here telling me what you'll do with the yarn if you win it. I will draw a winner in one weeks, on August 10th. All entries before 6pm that day will be counted.

If you're on ravelry, make sure to give me your username so I can easily get in touch with you!

This includes the following colors:
3 Midnight Blue - 546
3 Lt Grey - 591
3 Cape Cod Blue - 539
1 Forest Green - 534
1 Azure - 523

I would love to give that yarn a new home. I'm sure I could find lots of uses for it :o)

I would use the yarn to make an afghan for my grams. She has done so much for me, including teaching me to crochet. The colors would look perfect in her new apartment & it would be a nice way for me to say "thank you".

CraftyGamerGrl said...

What will I go with the yarn?

Baby stuff, cat toys, doll clothes, other random kid toys, charity squares, anything to just to get that knitting fix...and donate once I establish a stash of cute things I made.

I also think this is a great idea. I have yet to come to this conundrum myself, of TOO much YARN. And thank you for the offer of sharing yours.

I work in a hospital for people with complex medical problems. This is home for 95 patients. Every year a group of dedicated knitters makes sure that "Santa's Sack" holds one lap blanket for each and every patient.
These blankets get lots of use - providing an extra layer of warmth and comfort year round when patients are in bed or sitting in a wheelchair.
I would give that yarn to the knitters for their yearly good will gesture.
Thanks for the contest.

I just found out that my mom's youngest sister is having another baby (after twins two years ago, this brings the grandchild count to 17 or 18, I lost count :-P) and I would totally knit up a blanket (or three, so the twins aren't left out!) for the kids--they're the youngest by 12ish years, they need love!
I swear, they are the most spoiled babies ever. :D

Unknown said...

I would give it to Twizzler!

Oooohhh...comment for free yarn. Great idea! This looks like good charity-knitting yarn. Soft stuff, and free, can't beat it. I love to knit baby stuff. Lots of baby stuff to give away. Hats, mitts, socks, blankets. :)

I will add it to the box that I intend to gift to a woman I met on Rav who helps run a charity that makes comfort items for sick kids. She is truly awesome and only gives the yarn to volunteers who donate things to the charity to make sure it goes to the right place. I sent her another box in the past and she sent photos of all things that were made from the yarn.

I forgot to post what I would do with the yarn...I would make some warm clothing for my children for -30 temps we get here in winter. I would also use it to make hats, mittens for my kids as well as extras to donate to their school for kids who don't have a hat or mittens.

I would love to have that yarn. Our knitting group is about to start working on some lap blankets to donate to a local nursing home. This yarn would be perfect for us to use.

I would start knitting "boobies" for breast cancer survivors. I've learned that many women prefer the knitted replacements to the silicone implants. 1. There's the health issues of silicone, not to mention more surgery, 2. Comfort, 3. Interchangeability, little pink A's one day, black and white D's the next.

Members of my family and friends have suffered through breast cancer and surgeries and I think this is something I want to pursue very seriously. I'm thinking of starting a formal charity for it.

I would love to find several homes for your yarn! My DH and I are in the process of becoming medical foster parents, taking in medically ill children. Almost all of the children come into the program with absolutely nothing and literally nothing to call their own. We will only have each child for up to a few months each (usually) and my goal is to make sure each child leaves our home with their very own afghan. We will be primarily taking care of babies, however, the need is so great that I have started to collect and donate squares and yarn for larger afghans for older children and the teens who are in this program. I am in contact with our caseworker through this program and she is thrilled that we are trying to help because the need is so great for these kids.

If you send me the yarn, the love would literally be scattered to several deserving children who need nothing more than love!

I would make an afgan for my nephew, and my son....they have nice small beds! LOL

I'd love some real yarn to knit or crochet with for a change as I can usually only afford acrylic *shudders*!

I'd use it to make my OH's parents something nice for Christmas.

Knittingdancer on Raverly: I would use the yarn to make baby blankets or afghans. I also do some charity knitting.

chel said...

Well, as a poor college student (I work full time, too, but you know the bills rack up) I was going to ask for the yarn to make Christmas presents for family members. Not exactly sure what. Maybe a shawl for my mom, hats & scarves for nieces & nephews... But after reading the other replies, I almost think you should give it to someone else besides me. But I'll throw my name in the game. Thanks for being so generous. I know the yarn will be useful & loved once someone makes something with it.

I love your idea. Unfortunately I have no more room for stash. If fact if anyone can use pink or navy acrylic for charity knitting pm me on ravelry as babsknits.

My mother works as a palliative care nurse at a local hospital. That means that she helps dying people feel comfortable in their last days. She makes an attempt to get a quilt or afghan on the bed of every person she cares for. I would help make those afghans. I would also give some to the really cool old ladies my mom works with now to get the afghans and quilts, they can always use more yarn!

Wow! There are a lot of generous people out there with good hearts. I would use it to knit binkies and squeaky toys for dogs.
I don't know how you'll choose whom to send the yarn to! Good luck and thanks for sharing with us! Moerose from Ravelry

We have an animal shelter near us Watermelon Mountain Ranch (http://members.petfinder.org/~NM71/) that will shelter dogs and cats and try to adopt them out. They are non-profit and as such could really use some animal blankets that could be thrown in the wash. I have even seen rabbits sheltered there! That's what I would do with the yarn :) I am shenoahdesigns on Ravelry. Thank you for doing this.

I would use the yarn to expand my knitting skills (I'd describe myself as an "advanced beginner"), and make cute fun things for my pre-teen daughter!

My ravelry name is Sparky 136. I love Caron yarn. I would make me a lovely sweater from those beautiful colors. I also do charity knitting for several different groups. There are lots of projects I could use this stash for since I am on a limited income.

Kristen said...

Hi, I would make a sweater for my friend's dog, Roxy. My dog Belle is a husky-mix who loves the winter (even in Minnesota!) Roxy is her best dog friend, but she has very short hair and gets cold very quickly in the winter so playtime outside is never long enough. It would be great if Roxy could be warm enough to play with Belle outside in the winter.

And I'd probably try out baby stuff and do some charity knitting with the rest.

What an awesome thing to do! If I won this generous stash, I would use it for my participation in Knit for Kids. I've completed three sweaters for this cause (which donates sweaters to needy children living in colder climates) already, which you can see on my Ravelry projects page. Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway!

I knit slippers for the nursing home for the fall/winter. I'm currently working on rescue blankets for adopted cats/kittens, dogs/puppies. Every one of these little ones needs something to be able to call their own. They're rescued from all over the place and hubby holds a big adoption day at Petsense every Saturday to try to get as many as possible adopted out so places like the animal shelter, don't put them down. these little critters need love and you would not believe how happy even they are with a blankie of their own. I've done close to 60 blankies sofar and I still need to make lots more. I have a knitting machine to help me with this project and I can get about 5 done in a day. This yarn would be perfect for either one of those charity projects that I'm working on :o)

I am beankendall on Ravelry. I would knit my kids thing. I had 4 kids in 3 years. My husband is in the Marine Corps and our funds are very limited.( I have to buy diapers instead of yarn) I have two sisters who are Pregnant(both due in winter)And would love to be able to knit them gifts. I also have twin 10 month old girls and want to knit them a sweater or two for Christmas. We all decided to do a "Homemade" Christmas this year so the extra yarn would help. Thanks ~Bean

I have a collegue who has had her first baby some weeks ago. I would like to crochet a baby afghan with hearts for her, to remind of how a wonderful gift a child is even if she gives you a handful of work. I bet it could help her fight the baby blues. As I´m too home with my baby i cant afford to buy the yarn right now.

wow! That's a lot of yardage!!!! I would mostly use it to make clothes for my grand-niece, who's 7 months old. You know, little dresses, bibs, shirts, etc. Since the yarn is soft, it would be nice for her skin. Maybe a balket or two, and some washcloths.

Ok if this is posted 3 different times I apologize. Blogger is NOT my friend today. Anyway, if I won this yarn, I would probably knit up some afghans for those that need it. If Iget it for free, I'd like to knit it up for those who could really use it. And if you have any lonely sock yarn hanging around, I'd be happy to help you out with that as well....;-)

I would give to twizzler...I am going to find out where she gives the items out (I would love to be able to contribute to her cause). I have recently taught a friend how to knit and we are getting ready to attempt crocheting. But should you decide to spread around the bounty I would love the forest green! (I would send at least one lap blanket to twizzler)~knitngirl

there's a gal on ravelry, her screenname is blizzy - and she and a group of 20 women do all charity knitting for people overcoming mental problems? (i think that's what it is) - anyway, i know they could really use the yarn, and would be sharing the love with people who really need it - i hope you'll consider contacting her and sending some to her.

First, I have to say,how generous of you. :) As for what I'd do with the yarn, I'd love to make a blanket for my 3 year old nephew. His parents recently split and it kind of shows in his personality lately (he's become very clingy.)He's been tough to get to sleep. Since he doesn't have a blankie or stuffed animal that he's specifically attached to, I'd love to give him an extra special auntie-made "security" blanket just for him. I'd also make some toys for he and his brother, and I've always wanted to try charity knitting as well (hats, blanket squares.)Oh, and my ravelry name is Pookiebear.

Leesy said...

I crochet about 50 afghan squares a month for charity afghans, so this would definitely help me and the others I work with on this in that effort! We just use plain old granny squares since that's the easiest thing for multiple people to make identically. I'm Leesy on Ravelry.

Feisty Irish Wench said...

I'm FeistyIrishWench on ravelry as well. My brother is in the middle of an unpleasant marital split. Some of this included his bed being stolen while he was at work one day. He's finally got another bed (and an uncursed one at that) and I have been wanting to make him a blanket of some kind for his bed. He teases me about my yarn habit, but I love him anyway. What better way to get back at your little brother than to make him a blanket that will keep him warm. Plus, by the time I finish it, the blanket would no longer be considered "marital property" and would be his alone.
Although, my desire to share sisterly love with my little brother who's got tumult down to a T right now, pales in comparison to the charity knitting of others.

that's a lot of yarn! I would happily take it. What could it become? Scarves (I have 6 kids) hats and mittens. Maybe a lapghan or two (my house is very drafty) maybe a few baby sweaters.
I could also use some to make some snuggles to give to the animal shelter or lapghans to the old folks home. Lots of ideas come to mind!!
I'm AnitaO on Rav if I win.
And the 10th my oldest daughter turns 8. WhooHoo!!
PS: thanks for your generosity.

I would share this yarn with the charity knitting group I am a (small) part of. Most of the ladies are retired and on a fixed income. They need donations to be able to get a yarn 'fix' and then turn around and give the items to women's shelters, cancer patients, and other worthy causes.

i am knit by night on ravelry. I was a Peace corps volunteer in the worlds 3rds poorest nation ( malawi). 30.00 USD would feed a village for 6 months where i lived.

THERE must be internet video sites helping people learn how to knit near the refugee camps where i was.

First, I WANT THE FORREST GREEN!
i would knit the winterwonderland coat for me and my sister, THEN contact knitting for AFRICA group on ravelry. and see if i can make contact with my village and send a shipment to my old village.

Okay ,everyone says this should work. I would love to have your overflow(?) I can see a lovely Fair Isle in the offing. The selection of colours would force me to be more creative in design and colour use. It's too easy to go buy yarn that is presented by colour number in a pattern, I love changing the designs that I knit but have trouble blending colours. You lovely colours would force my hand and makle me stretch as a knitter. 'Bout time I did a bit of that! I'm Auntsugar off the Rav!

This is really a generous offer from you - thank you for offering this yarn! I knit for several charities -- hats and scarves for local shelters - need to be predominantly dark colors and washable - and I knit for 'warm woolies' a charity which mostly collects items in wool for children on the poorest and coldest Indian reservations in the US - in SD and Montana - and for children in Mongolia. But Baby blankets sent to them can be of acrylic -- and need to be large sized and knitted double-stranded -- and dark colors are also good because these families do not have access to washing machines. So this yarn would be a great resource for me to support my work for these wonderful organizations. I am YarnTalksToMe on Ravelry

I would donate it to Falcon Feather Fibers, a local organization that is teachinig seniors in a low income center and inner city children how to knit, drochet and engage in other fiber related arts. They do wonderful work and there is always such a need as many of their students have very limited resources. I was recently at a reception featuring some of their artesians and they had beautiful work!

I do not have a particular project in mind, but I did come up with an idea....

If I was chosen as a recipient any amt of yarn that by chance would be shared with me, I would match and give away that much to another knitter or crocheter!
I would need to update my very ancient blog site tho!
Very good incentive to get to work on my blog! thanks! sue (will post link to blog at knitlip profile on ravelry)

Hey! I'm Aya from Ravelry and just saw your post over the yarn forum.

I like this idea very much and because I don't purchase much acrylic, but would like to knit some X-mas gifts that can handle some washing abuse, I figured this would be a good thing.

The Midnight Blue could be a sweater for my mil. Cape Cod blue a blanket for my nephew, light grey a sweater for my oldest sister in law and the green would make a small sweater for the youngest sister in law.

Wow... that would cover most X-mas gifts. Although I'd have to start it all very soon and not slack!
